History
The Village of West Dundee
In the early 1800's pioneers heading west from Chicago to settle new territories came upon
the Fox River Valley, an area of tranquillity, beauty and potential that made them give up
dreams of finding anything superior further west. By 1837, a thriving community had
developed on the western banks of the river. Residents drew lots for the honor of naming
the settlement and Dundee was chosen by a young man in honor of his former home - Dundee,
Scotland.
The community thrived and soon many of the residents elected to expand to the Western
bank. This new settlement became known as East Dundee and the older one West Dundee. From
those earliest days, these two villages although separated by the river that first
attracted settlers to the area, have been united in a common spirit of growth and
development.
