Lake In The
Hills.................................Population 15,751
History
In the 1920's Judge Walter J. LaBuy purchased 473 acres of farmland from Arthur E.
Dierecks, an Algonquin real estate and insurance man. The judge built a home for each of
his children and his wife. Known as the 'stucco' houses, only one remains in its original
condition as the others have had numerous additions.
The five houses are located along the Indian Trail, not far from the stone entrance at
Woodland Road. Originally most of the early homes built in Lake In The Hills were summer
homes. Judge LaBuy is credited for planting the many pine and oak trees so attractive to
home owners.
Woods Creek was not far from the stucco homes. Through the judge's efforts, the creek was
damned up, creating Lake In The Hills (Lake #1) in 1923. Today's lake is not the original
as it was enlarged years later.
The Lake In The Hills Property Association was founded on September 2, 1950. In 1952, the
Village of Lake In The Hills was incorporated and in 1975, the Community building was
erected at 1212 Crystal Lake Road.
