History
The Village of Gilberts
The Village of Gilberts is located west on Illinois 72, a former Indian trail and stage
coach route which became the village's first paved road in 1930. The Northwest Tollway 90
paved road was extended through the village in 1956. In 1982, the Chicago & North
western Railroad extended service to the community which was then known as Gilberts
Station. In 1882, David Haeger, the founder of Haeger Pottery, built what became the
largest tile and brick factory in Illinois on a site that is now the North end of Railroad
Street. Gilberts renamed unchanged until the 1970's when the first industrial park was
constructed along Windmill Meadows, Dunhill Estates and Gilberts Glen subdivisions. Growth
has continued with a third industrial park and the Indian Trails Subdivision.
